God's Love is Immeasurable Bible Verse: "For I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me," Isa. 46:9 Teaching Concepts: We can't measure God's love or ever really understand how much he loves us. It is higher than the heavens, everlasting, never fails, and is priceless. Only his love is perfect. Digging In Preparation: You will need a ruler and an object to measure, a thermometer and glass of cold water, measuring spoons and something to measure with them like salt or sugar, a scale and something to measure depending on the scale and some objects that you know the price of. To start, ask the children to look at everything on the table and ask them if they can figure out what they have in common. (They all measure things.) Play a measuring game. Hold up each object you brought in such as the glass of cold water. Ask the children what they think the temperature of the water is. Have one of the children use the thermometer to determine the temperature. Use all the measuring devices you brought in the same manner letting the children take turns measuring. Ask the children if they can think of other ways and things we use to measure things that we haven't already used. Write them on the board. Here Are Some Examples: Time - Carbon dating, clocks, stopwatches, age, calendars, looks (shiny and new or old and wrinkled) Speed - Odometer, m.p.h. how fast cars go, how fast we can run, how fast a ball travels, etc. Distance - Rulers, distance to the stars, - height, depth (sonar), width, length etc., area, square feet, etc. Value - We try to determine how much things are worth. We use dollars, other objects for trade, and blue books to determine the value of a car or other vehicle. We try to determine how much friends and family value us --Do they care about us, etc. We determine an objects value by what shape it is in, is it new or old, etc. Performance - We measure performance using tests to measure how much we know such as IQ tests, competitions of strength, physical ability, musical abilities, mental, spelling bees, etc. We give out prizes of first, second, and third place and awards. We rate a movie by the number of stars. We measure how well people can do things. Temperature - Degrees, how cold or hot. We measure our body temperature, it is important to know the temperature of our refrigerator, outside, oven, air conditioner and our heater and water heater. Looks- We measure looks using beauty contests. How much - We use cups, teaspoons, gallons, barrels, truckloads, tons, etc. How many - We use numbers and words like, too many, not enough, etc. We've discovered that there are a lot of different ways to measure things. It seems like just about everything can be measured in some manner, doesn't it? It seems like we measure things constantly without even realizing it. God's Love There is one thing, though, that is impossible to measure. Can anyone think what it might be? It is God's Love. Time: We can't measure God's love using time. The Bible tells us that God loves us with an everlasting love. "I have loved you with an everlasting love;" Jeremiah 31:3 "And that he will never leave us of forsake us." " . . . for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." Deuteronomy 31:6 Distance: We can't measure God's love using distance. Romans 8:38-39, "For I am convinced that neither death not life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Intelligence: We can never fully understand how much God loves us. No matter how smart we are or how much we know, we can never really understand how much God loves us. Ephesians 3:18-19, "And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God." NIV "and may you be able to feel and understand, as all God's children should, how long, how wide, how deep, and how high his love really is; and to experience this love for yourselves, though it is so great that you will never see the end of it or fully know or understand it." Ephesians 3:18-19 TLB Performance: God's love is perfect. He will never take away his love no matter what we do. Although our parents and friends disappoint us and hurt us and sometimes leave, it is important to know that God will never leave us or stop loving us. The love we receive and get from other people is never perfect. Only God's love is perfect. He loved us and knew us before we were ever born. (Eph 1:4) God's love never fails. He doesn't break his promises. Value: God's love is priceless. There is nothing we can do to earn God's love. We can't possibly be good enough. He loved us so much that he sent his only son to die on the cross to pay for our sins. "For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will--to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves." Ephesians 1:4 "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:23 Conclusion: We can't measure God's love or ever really understand how much he loves us. It is higher than the highest mountains and deeper than the deepest ocean. It is higher, longer, deeper, and wider than we could ever imagine. (Ephesians 3:17- 20) But we can praise and thank him for his great love. Crafts 1. Inchworm On a Leaf Inchworm on Leaf Craft 1. Before class use some needle-nose pliers to bend down the sharp ends of green or brown pipe cleaners. 2. Print out the Leaf Patterns and cut them out. You can use green paper or let your children color the leaves green in class. (Printing Problems?) 3. In class give each child a green or brown pipe cleaner. Show them how to wind the pipe cleaner around a thin paintbrush to make the inchworm. 4. Give them each two tiny eyes to glue to one end. They can then glue the inchworm to the leaf. 2. Make Inchworm Refrigerator Magnets Inchworm Chenille Stem Craft 1. Before class use some needle-nose pliers to bend down the sharp ends of green or brown pipe cleaners. 2. In class give each child a green or brown pipe cleaner. Show them how to wind the pipe cleaner around a thin paintbrush to make the inchworm. 3. Cut tiny pieces of magnets to glue to the feet. 4. You can also glue pieces of the hook Velcro to each end so that the inchworms stick to clothes. Let the children experiment on what the inchworms will stick to. Activities 1. Outside Activities 1. Walk-Like-An-Inchworm Relay Race - Explain to the children how an inchworm walks. Tell them to place both hands on the ground in front of them. Try to keep your knees stiff and legs straight. Walk forward with your hands as far as you can and then walk forward with your feet to meet back up with your hands. Don't move your feet until your hands are extended as far as you can extend them. Then move your feet up to your hands, not moving your hands until your feet meet up to your hands. Let them practice walking like an inchworm. 2. Inch Along - An inch is a unit of measurement (noun or a thing) but it can also be a verb or something that shows action. To inch along means to move very slowly. Let's see how slowly we can move. Tell the children to line up against one wall and on the word go they are to try to inch along as slowly as they can. They must keep moving forward but move as slowly as they can. The slowest child wins. 3. Don't Step on the Inchworms - Place children into groups of two and blindfold one child in each group. Have the groups line up at one end of a field. Place green noodles (five-feet foam pool toys) in the playing area on the ground facing different directions. Have the children who are not blindfolded lead the children who are blindfolded across to the other end of the field. They may only lead by their words. They cannot touch the blindfolded child. If the blindfolded child kicks or steps on a noodle "inchworm", he is out. The first team to make it to the finish line wins. If you don't have noodles, you can use rope, towels, blankets, or anything else that won't hurt a child if he or she falls on it. To keep the game safe have only three or four teams compete against each other at a time. The winners from each round can compete against each other to find the champions. Don't forget the change the arrangement of "inchworms" each round. 2. Inside Activities 1. Make the Longest Worm - Give each team some silly putty. See which team can make the longest worm in one minute without breaking it. If it breaks, they can't put it back together. 2. What's an Inch? - Give each child a small amount of green play dough and show them how to make inchworms by rolling the dough into a ball and then rolling it between their hands. Use a pencil to poke holes for eyes. Digging Deeper 1. Bible Verse Review Game Assign groups of children different letters or words from the Bible verse. Have them use their bodies to form the letters and words. Take pictures of each group. Print them out if possible and make a poster. You can also play like Charades. have the groups of children pick a word from the verse and form the letters using their bodies. Have the other children guess which word they are trying to form. 2. Discussion Have groups of children look up the following Bible verses and discuss what they tells us about God. Then have them share with the entire group what they have discovered. Romans 8:38-39, Jeremiah 31:3, Deuteronomy 31:6, Romans 8:38-39, Ephesians 3:18-20 3. Pray Thank you, Father, for loving us, for creating us, and providing for us a way to be forgiven of our sins. You showed us the greatest love of all by sending your son to die on the cross so that we might have eternal life.
